Looking for a skincare ingredient that unclogs, minimises spots, and makes your skin silky smooth? You’ve found it! Here’s all you need to know about this trusty blemish-fighter.

What is Salicylic Acid?

Salicylic Acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) and a chemical exfoliant mostly known for its blemish-fighting benefits. If you have blemishes, oily skin, clogged pores or dealt with teenage acne, it’s very likely that you have come across Salicylic Acid at some point. It’s well-known for its exceptional ability to unclog pores and features in many anti-acne products (for adults too!) for that very reason. But Salicylic Acid has more tricks up its sleeve! It has become a real crowd pleaser for its exfoliating and smoothing qualities and is a staple in every skincare junkie’s routine.

How does Salicylic Acid work?

Salicylic Acid, much like other acids, exfoliates the skin by weakening the bonds between dead skin cells. This facilitates their even shedding, promoting cell turnover for a brighter, smoother, and more glowing complexion. However, unlike certain acids like Glycolic Acid (AHAs), Salicylic Acid is oil-soluble, which means it penetrates deep into the pores and effectively clears out dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells from within. By preventing pore congestion, Salicylic Acid helps stave off the development of blemishes, making it an exceptional ingredient for fighting acne and maintaining clear skin.
